Thank you to The Nerdery for underwriting the Know this Nerd? series.

Eric Johnson is a motorcycle riding freelance web developer, Startup Weekend Twin Cities vet and “proud nerd since 1977.”

When and how did you originally become interested in technology?

When I was a kid, I disassembled anything I could get my hands on. This led to a lot of busted phones, vcr’s, and other electronics in our house.

At what age did you write your first computer program?  What did it do?

My first program was in 3rd or 4th grade and was built in Logo. It used the turtle to draw an outline of a sword on the screen.

What do you do now? What languages are you proficient in?

I’m a freelance web developer. I specialize in WordPress but am fluent in HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, and some JS. I also do project management.

How have you increased your skillset over the years, formally or otherwise?

Active development work and solving real world problems is the best way for me to push my boundaries and explore new technology solutions.

The Nerdery

Which do you prefer in programming, the struggle or the achievement?

The achievement. Nothing feels better than locking down that last bit of code and watching your design come together or your numbers crunch perfectly.

What people, groups, projects, or resources were most influential in your development as programmer?

The local developer communities in the Twin Cities. Our town has an awesome network of people that are ready and willing to help anyone succeed.

What do you enjoy about it? Is there anything you dislike?

I love the relationship building aspect of working with local businesses. I also really enjoy helping people solve their web technology problems.

If you were to be doing anything else, what would that be?

Astronaut. Definitely an astronaut.

What does agile software development mean to you?

A process that allows for rapid, iterative software development and robust feedback on a structured release schedule. If it is managed well ;)

Where do you spend most of your time online?

My Google Reader feeds. Any time I run into content on the web that I find interesting or informative, I shove it into my massive RSS collection.

What concerns or excites you most about where technology is headed?

I’m more excited than concerned about the future of tech. From wider adoption of cloud based platforms to more standards compliant browsers, I’m in!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you are a local developer, join the community! Be a part of TECHdotMN. Join CoCo MSP or St. Paul. The people are great here and ready to meet you!
