Know this Nerd? Meet Irv Briscoe

Irv Briscoe

Thank you to The Nerdery for underwriting the Know this Nerd? series. Meet Irv Briscoe – a “dude who writes code.”

When and how did you originally become interested in technology?

I was the the kid that would dissect every toy my parents bought me. It was more fun figuring out how they worked than playing with them.  I started writing code when myspace was popular. I loved being able to change my page’s background color and pimping it out.

At what age did you write your first computer program? What did it do?

I built my first website when I was 17. I bought a cheap shared hosting server and hacked my way to figuring out how to get something on the internet. It was one of the best feelings ever.

What do you do now? What languages are you proficient in?

I’m currently a Front-End Developer. I write HTML, CSS, jQuery, JavaScript, PHP, HAML, SASS, Slim and anything I can get my hands on.

I love learning new languages. I recently started dabbling into the Rails world. After getting help from Dave Collins to get my local environment squared away, I was good to go. I pushed my first Ruby project live a few weeks ago (

How have you increased your skillset over the years, formally or otherwise?

I started out as a designer but got frustrated that I couldn’t develop my own designs. After dabbling into html and css, I thought “Oh Shit! This is exactly what I was doing when I was pimping out my myspace theme.”

Which do you prefer in programming, the struggle or the achievement?

Both. The struggle is more memorable but the achievements make it all worth it.

What people, groups, projects, or resources were most influential in your development as programmer?

Twitter is my most influential resource as a programmer. I’ve learned so much from the design and development community through twitter.

I got the chance to go to NYC in April for a month and I had a blast meeting up with people i’ve known through twitter for the first time in real life. It was a fun experience and I learned a lot about what other developers, designers and programmers are working on in different industries.

What do you enjoy about it? Is there anything you dislike?

I enjoy working with clients to create experiences that engage their customers, and help build lasting brand relationships.

If you were to be doing anything else, what would that be?

I would be a Photographer.

Where do you spend most of your time online?

Facebook, Twitter, Designspiration, Instagram and Dribbble.

What concerns you most about where technology is headed?

The possibility that government organizations may someday succeed in regulating/censoring the web is pretty scary.

What excites you most about where technology is headed?

The possibilities are endless! There’s so much that we can do to leverage the web in order to make our individual lives better.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I love minneapolis and all of the help i’ve gotten from our tech community. If you have any questions or need any help with the languages I’m proficient in, send me a message at Irv [at] v91 [dot] co!
