“Minneapolis, April 15, 2015 – The Nerdery has announced the selection of 14 nonprofit organizations and 14 teams of volunteer web pros bound for Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge in the Twin Cities during the weekend of May 2-3. These teams will help the nonprofit organizations create websites they couldn’t otherwise afford, pro bono:”

In Chicago, 12 teams serving 12 nonprofits; in Kansas City, 5 teams serving 5 nonprofits.

Eligible nonprofits (501c3-registered organizations) applied for the opportunity to direct a team of web pros by articulating their vision of how nerds could further their organization’s mission through better use of interactive technology. Development teams self-organized with 8-10 volunteers covering skill sets required to build a website, including front-end development, back-end development, project management, digital/content strategy, user experience design, graphic design, and quality assurance engineering.

Since the first Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge (overnightwebsitechallenge.com) in 2008, more than $5 million in professional web-development services have been donated by volunteer web developers and designers to 144 nonprofits in Illinois, Minnesota, Kansas and Missouri.

Before Web Challenge weekend, The Nerdery will convene team captains and nonprofit reps for an orientation/speed-dating exercise to make best-possible matches between orgs and nerds – but neither the nonprofits nor teams know who they’ll be paired with until the 24-hour countdown clock begins ticking at 9 a.m. on May 2. An independent panel of judges representing the nonprofit and interactive communities will assess the work of development teams; this same panel of judges also selects participating nonprofits.

Web Challenge Awards night will be May 25, with nerds and nonprofits fully rested. Top teams are recognized for Design/UX, Functionality, Impact, and Best in Show. The People’s Choice award will be open to public voting. Top prize remains bragging rights, and the gratification of nerdy deeds done in the name of community service.
