When/why/how did Target Start?
Target began as an innovation within the Dayton Company brand. In 1961, as the Dayton Company looked for new ways to strengthen relationships with its guests, company leadership recognized an opportunity to develop and introduce a new kind of mass-market discount store that caters to value oriented shoppers seeking a higher quality experience.
On May 1, 1962 Target hosted its first grand opening in Roseville, Minn. Heralded as a, “new idea in discount stores,” Target differentiated itself from other retail stores by combining many of the best department store features — fashion, quality and service — with the low prices of a discounter. By the end of 1962, Target opened additional locations in St. Louis Park, Crystal and Duluth, Minnesota.

Why does Target sponsor TECHdotMN?
We have been busy revolutionizing tech at Target. Just over a year ago, about 70% of our engineering staff was third-party contractors vs. 30% Target team members. In just a year’s time, we’ve completely flipped that ratio—so that now about 70% of our engineering staff is team members while 30% are contractors. Going forward we’d like to see that ratio get up to 80:20. We believe that to win in retail today and into the future you’ve got to own and build your own technology, and that is what prompted the move to a service-based architecture that we have built in-house.
TECHdotMN has many reaches into our local Twin Cities tech community. We are looking to team up with technology experts who can connect the in-store and digital environment, and make on-demand-shopping at Target simple, secure and enjoyable. Engineers will help develop strategies that drive innovation and sales, while creating a fast and frictionless experience for millions of guests and team members.
