Brent Kastner is a startup CTO currently with URTURN & Tarmac.

How long have you been working in technology for and what is your technical background?

I’ve been serious about technology since middle school where I ran a BBS with some friends. I worked hard to earn enough money in my early highschool years to buy a 486 that could run DOOM.

Those early years helped me understand the hardware side and I eventually got my professional start working with hardware (servers and networks) in 1996. I transitioned into software development in 2000 as I was working at BestBuy on their first ecommerce website.

Before that, I studied Computer Engineering with a focus on Embedded Systems at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. I have always had a love of technology, from Number Munchers to programming in BASIC, so software engineering was a natural path.

How long have you been working in technology for and what is your background?

Like many fellow techies my age, I got my start when I was a kid, around 8 years old, on an Apple II. My dad, who at the time was a math teacher, was just getting into bringing computers into the school. He brought one home to work on for the summer, showed me a few simple Apple BASIC statements, and I never looked back.
