About This Event:
Come jam with us!
Design Jam is a mini design hackathon that gets attendees to work together for a good cause. We will virtually gather in community, collaborate with like-minded individuals and build your portfolio – all while helping an incredible, nonprofit organization. Our mission for this Design Jam is to put together resources, ideate programs and suggest tactics for service-industry professionals, while spreading the goodness of the user-centered design & problem-solving process!
THE CHALLENGE: Restaurant workers need tools to create financial and career security in a volatile economy. We believe that creating and providing low-cost options to upskill, reskill, and make saving money possible, we can leverage the natural talents and work ethic of this group to become more stable and secure. We will know this to be true when restaurant workers are able to earn more and to begin saving. The challenge: how might we help restaurant workers create financial and career security?
ABOUT THE NON-PROFIT: Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation is an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?UX professionals, designers, researchers, developers, prototypers, data heads, civic hackers, leaders. We will be randomly pairing attendees in small pods to collaborate.
WHAT WILL THE EVENT BE LIKE? We will present the challenge at the beginning of the event. Groups of attendees will spend about two hours working through the phases of research, design, and testing, on a solution of their choosing. At the end of the Jam, we will share and discuss our work with the featured nonprofit and other attendees. If you are uncomfortable showing what you worked on, you will not be pressured into sharing publicly. We want everyone to feel included and welcome.
WHAT WILL WE MAKE? At the end of the Design Jam, together we will have created many solutions to support service industry professionals who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.
