Job Description

Innovative Design Labs (IDL) is a research and development business, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, specializing in advanced sensor development, embedded systems, and integration. We seek a resourceful and collaborative individual ready to create products that improve people’s lives. A successful candidate will have a software or electrical engineering background with a focus on new product development, embedded software architecture, signal processing, and algorithm design. This is an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and move ideas from concept to product.


  • Generate innovative technology ideas
  • Direct and perform product development heavily focused on embedded real-time systems
  • Design and create software for computer vision, data fusions, and estimation systems
  • Manage the technology transfer process leading up to production with partner corporations


  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software engineering in product development
  • Must be a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and sense of personal responsibility for work outcomes
  • Proficient in C/C++ for embedded systems, computer vision, and/or signal processing
  • Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines
  • Experience developing real-time, multi-threaded systems
  • Experience with source code version control and issue tracking
  • General curiosity and a willingness to take on tasks outside of the embedded systems environment
  • Legally permitted to work in the United States
  • Ability to work in our office located in NE Minneapolis, MN


  • M.S. or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Robotics, Computer Vision, Applied Estimation, and/or Machine Learning experience
  • C#, MATLAB, Python, Web and Mobile Development
  • Experience with real time operating system (FreeRTOS, RTLinux or similar).
  • Medical device design with an understanding of the FDA clearance process
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations
  • Ability to manage relationships with commercialization partners
