Director of Information Technology

Reports to: Managing Director

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for all theater-wide electronic, hardware, and software systems including all business applications, telecommunications systems, and ecommerce applications.  The Director defines and implements technical strategy to support all aspects of the business, driving process improvement across the organization and directing day-to-day information systems operations effectively and efficiently.  The Director analyzes the needs of different departments and determines ways to meet business objectives by modifying existing or developing new information processing systems. This position is full-time, exempt and benefits-eligible.



Information Systems

  • Provides leadership and assumes key responsibility for all organizational hardware and software.
  • Oversees the technology “service desk” and ticketing system to ensure that acceptable technical supports are in place.
  • Oversees and manages organization-wide voice systems with established vendors and explores options as needed.
  • Sets policy for the purchase and maintenance of computers, phones and misc. other technology.
  • Adapt and maintain industry technology in onstage production and creative work.

Risk Management and Performance Analysis

  • Collaborate with colleagues on maintenance and disaster recovery of the ticket sales portal and customer relations systems (CRM - Tessitura).
  • Coordinate with security to insure safety of patrons and security of information by utilizing software and hardware technologies, including security cameras and phone recording systems.
  • Manage emergency power systems, network and connections. Serve as a resource for facilities and contractors on computer-specific aspects of infrastructure (including, without limitation, fiber optics, conduits, and door control systems).
  • Develop departmental and organizational policy and procedures, data security standards, methods of operation, and data processing schedules.
  • Develop and maintain system disaster recovery plans and business continuity plan, in the event of a power failure, damage to system, etc. Manage routine back-up of key data and security systems.
  • Build and maintain highly available systems for on stage productions.
  • Be on call for system emergencies.

Compliance and System Maintenance

  • Conduct and complete system backups, maintenance, server upgrades and patching.
  • Monitor and manage activities and processes related to Payment Card Industry (PCI) and personally identifiable information (PII) compliance. Provide and support high-end firewalling, intrusion inspection, malware protection, and other relevant system security measures to protect the integrity of patrons’ information.

Development and Integration Adaptation

  • Develop and oversee a strategic comprehensive information systems plan reflecting the organization’s mission, values, and strategic business plans.
  • Work with Guthrie leadership to determine the technology business requirements, define technical architecture direction, and implement changes as appropriate. Develop and present project roadmap and associated capital and operating budgets to Senior Management, or other interested parties such as the Board of Directors.
  • Provide advice on evaluation, return on investment, selection, implementation and maintenance of information systems, ensuring appropriate investment in strategic and operational systems. Ensure systematic process for decisions on whether to “make, buy, or outsource” technology.
  • Maintain a high degree of expertise in order to research, analyze, evaluate and recommend new technology developments in a cutting-edge theatrical design community. Advise other department managers on the applicability, costs, and schedule impacts for the performing arts.
  • Lead, champion, and support projects related to implementing such best practices.
  • Collaborate with Artistic and Production staff to ensure optimal use of technology in the theaters. Provide support during both office and production hours. Support routine theater electronic needs, such as ticket scanners, LED towers, information monitors, multimedia products, etc.
  • Trouble shoot issues, elevating and collaborating as needed with other ITS staff members to problem solve.
  • Act with integrity and adaptability when problem solving to develop the best solution at the highest industry standard.

Operations and Administration

  • Develop and recommend a fiscally sound department budget based on department goals and organizational needs. Monitor and manage departmental expenditures, continuously seeking opportunities to reduce or eliminate unnecessary expenditures and find cost-effective ways to do business.
  • Establish and oversee daily operations of all business systems, and regularly evaluate and monitor systems applications for effectiveness and future viability.
  • Manage selection and evaluation of application and technology vendors.
  • Coordinate vendor support of desktop and multifunction printers.
  • Document, coordinate, and archive network activity.
  • Implement and maintain technologies for creative and onstage productions.
  • Support and integrate industry production stage technology within the Guthrie facility.

 Leadership and Supervision

  • Serve as a member of the operations team and as a conduit for information between management and Guthrie staff.
  • Facilitate a customer service oriented environment in which other departments are encouraged to seek and are satisfied with help and guidance on technology issues. Provide leadership to facilitate a customer focused technology team.
  • Lead, manage and supervise the ITS Support Specialist, Systems Administrator, Database Administrator.
  • Using the organizational monthly check-in form, complete monthly check-ins with all direct reports.
  • Actively participate in team building. Fostering a work environment of artistic excellence, community, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and financial responsibility.
  • Hire staff members to ensure quality work.
  • Attend and/or run department meetings to communicate pertinent information along to the employees.
  • Coach and develop staff members by monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback; facilitating conflict resolution among employees; ensuring adherence to legal and organizational policies and procedures and undertaking disciplinary actions if the need arises; and completing annual performance evaluations.
  • Maintain and approve direct report timesheets, Personal Time Off requests, and other personnel records.



  • Must possess 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience managing or directing an information systems environment that includes software application management and ecommerce applications.
  • BS in programming, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field preferred.

  • Strong information technology generalist skills.  Demonstrated advanced knowledge of all facets of information technology.
  • Track record of leading application architects in an enterprise setting across multiple technology platforms, including Microsoft and Linux.
  • Track record in leading strategic initiatives and providing outstanding business results from vision to implementation.
  • Thorough knowledge of trends in the industry, state of the art database engines, operating systems, servers and telecommunications hardware and software.
  • Strong understanding of disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Success in negotiation vendor contracts and managing effective vendor relationships.
  • High levels of professionalism, interpersonal skills, discretion/confidentiality, good judgment and influencing skills. Excellent communicator and relationship builder.
  • Experience leading a team in a non-profit environment.  Proven ability to build, mentor, and inspire a team of professionals.
  • Demonstrated customer service focus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multi-functional teams toward a common goal.
  • Ability to prioritize the needs of a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic vision, analytical skills, and a commitment to success and high standards of quality.
  • Strong passion for the performing arts, and theater especially, a plus.
