After exploring the possibility of a sale last year, local software firm MakeMusic (NASDAQ:MMUS) took a big step towards ‘strategic repositioning’ when Karen van Lith was named CEO less than three months ago.
The leadership transition has since turned MakeMusic into a fresh story about the pursuits of re-invention. In our interview by tech entrepreneur Sarah Young, van Lith describes her first few months, “the four areas of growth opportunity” she sees ahead, along with her thoughts on direction, earnings and new product development.
The Eden Prairie-based company is best known as the creators of Finale and SmartMusic, a software and systems suite for music educators and musicians. MakeMusic maintains a Minnesota payroll of approximately 100 employees (108 total), generated $17m revenue in 2010, and has a market capitalization of roughly $25m.
