What is the name of the company and/or product? Where is it found online?
What problem does this solve?
HouseTalent allows you to track and share your home improvement projects, making it easy to connect with and get inspiration from other DIYers.
What is the full launch/release date planned?
We’re starting public beta today
Who is on the team?
What is the specific technology or combination of technologies that makes this run?
The app is built on top of Rails and Bootstrap. Our mobile apps will be built on Appcelerator.
Is there a revenue model? How big is the market and how will you scale?
We will offer pro user accounts for individuals and businesses (with added features), paid placement for suggested services/products and some form of high quality display advertising. Home improvement projects account for $300 billion in the U.S. with the average project costing $3,000. Home Depot and Lowe’s reported revenues of nearly $68 billion (FY 2011) and $49 billion (FY 2010), respectively.
What is your greatest strength?
We have good a user interface and are able to implement features and changes quickly. It feels like we’re making good choices on the technical side and laying a good foundation for the future.
What is your biggest weakness?
Our biggest weakness is not having a full-time community manager. At this stage, getting the first key users is critical for wider adoption. We’re turning more of our attention to recruiting a few bloggers with built-in audiences to help raise awareness and generate traffic and registrations.
What is one resource you could use that would take this to the next level?
A full-time community manager.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We’re proud to be working on this right here in St. Paul as we attempt to build a viable business.
