Beta Byte: Purlew

PurlewBeta Byte is a series underwritten by Bust Out Solutions for that early stage tech found somewhere between idea and traction.

What is the name of the company and/or product? Where is it found online?

What problem does this solve and what was the “aha” moment?

Purlew is a town square for the digital age. Our goal is simple; to reinvigorate neighborhoods by empowering engaging neighbors to take ownership and responsibility of their communities. Our platform is the plaza in which neighbors can socialize, hear news, and buy goods. Members are encouraged to explore the community using a local directory of parks, businesses, and services. Through the use of posts, messages, and events, Purlew supplies the tools for members to share a common space to connect, exchange information, and collaborate. Most importantly, Purlew promotes safety and collective efficacy.

What is the full launch/release date planned?

We will do an open public beta launch on May 30th. We are encouraging people to sign-up and check it out. During the beta we will continue to iteratively release enhancements in preparation for our nationwide launch this fall.

Who is on the team?

What is the specific technology or combination of technologies is used? Is there any IP?

Purlew is built on the Microsoft platform using .NET 4.5/ MVC 4 and SQL 2012 server as its core technology. It leverages various 3rd party tools and services including Google Maps, Factual, Yelp, and Microsoft Bing. Purlew has been designed and optimized to run on Microsoft Azure’s hosting platform. The Core UI is built on Twitter Bootstrap, Angular JS and JQuery, and is desktop, tablet, and mobile ready.

What is the size/scope of your market and how will you scale?

Our markets are the 114 Million households throughout the US. Once we exit Beta we will begin marketing campaigns in select cities as well as utilize strategic partnerships to help promote our site and mission.

What is your revenue model?

Membership to residents is free. Businesses can opt-in to enhance their listing with images, descriptions, tags, and create unlimited local deals and events through a monthly subscription. As we reach critical mass, our database of businesses will be a huge asset as well.

What is your greatest strength?

Our greatest strength is our team. We have been privileged to be able to work with some of the best advisors and most skilled developers. The access we have been given through Red Wing Ignite Accelerator has given us a tremendous advantage.

What is your biggest weakness?

Our biggest weakness is time and resources. We are bootstrapping development so things take us longer than we hope they would. Being able to work only nights and weekends can really slow things down.

What is one resource you could use that would take this to the next level?

Exceptional developers experienced in Angular JS, frontend development, .Net, and CSS that have time to dedicate to the project. We are also in need of a truly gifted designer to help spice things up. We are able to pay, just need someone free enough to work on it for a specified amount of time without distractions.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

If you are a city official interested in piloting our beta with us we would love to hear from you and see how our platform can provide a venue for cities to engage with their residents. [email protected]
