Minneapolis-based virtual reality startup Visual has received $50k in seed-stage capital from angel investors that include MakerBot cofounder Bre Pettis and videoblogging pioneer Steve Garfield.
Visual was cofounded by Chuck Olsen and Taylor Carik in response to constraints of the real world. Together with CTO Chris Johnson from Dual Reality Games, their vision is to create the first “social media viewer” application.
Visual will be in San Francisco next week for Jason Calacanis’ Launch Festival
to debut their MVP built in Unreal for Instagram using Samsung Gear VR
. The application enables VR users to browse social media content simply by turning their head and gazing at photos or hashtag keywords; they plan to incorporate more data streams and customizable environments in future updates.
“We’re ultimately mixing 3D video game elements with social media,” says Carik. Partner Chuck Olsen believes that a VR hardware boom will inevitably lend itself more mainstream use cases and tap a $5.2b consumer market.
