Local entrepreneur and equine enthusiast Mike McHugh cofounded HSS in 2011 as a novel IoT solution that connected a sensor embedded in the horse shoe with a SaaS platform to monitor vitals like heat, pressure and pulse.
There are an estimated 75 million horses in the world, 7.5 million performance horses in North America alone, and thoroughbred racing horses can run up to $10m each. HSS was invented to increase the longevity of the animals life and to protect the investment.
Since then, McHugh and his team have expanded horizons, now applying the tech to multiple applications including asset tracking, agriculture, and supply chain. This opens HSS up to an array of opportunities in bigger verticals than the niche they started with.
It’s estimated that the venture has received $800k in outside funding to date; HSS is perhaps the most under appreciated IoT startup around town.
