Thank You Target for reinvesting!

What does Target do?

We fulfill the needs and fuel the potential of our guests. That means making Target a preferred shopping destination in all channels by delivering outstanding value, continuous innovation and exceptional experiences—consistently fulfilling our Expect More. Pay Less. brand promise.

When/why/how did Target Start?

Target began as an innovation within the Dayton Company brand. In 1961, as the Dayton Company looked for new ways to strengthen relationships with its guests, company leadership recognized an opportunity to develop and introduce a new kind of mass-market discount store that caters to value oriented shoppers seeking a higher quality experience.

On May 1, 1962 Target hosted its first grand opening in Roseville, Minn. Heralded as a, “new idea in discount stores,” Target differentiated itself from other retail stores by combining many of the best department store features — fashion, quality and service — with the low prices of a discounter. By the end of 1962, Target opened additional locations in St. Louis Park, Crystal and Duluth, Minnesota.

What is unique about Target?

Today Target is America’s second-largest retailer, we stay ahead in today’s ultra-competitive retail market by challenging ourselves to become more efficient and more intelligent, providing guests with the best shopping experience possible. The pace is fast, the atmosphere is fun and the people are friendly. Every team member is encouraged to innovate, contribute ideas and discover solutions as an important part of a world-class team.

Behaving ethically and with integrity is essential to maintaining our reputation as a great place to work, as a preferred shopping destination and as a responsible corporate citizen. We consistently set high expectations for everything we do, and we’re proud to be recognized as one of the most respected and responsible companies in the world.

Why does Target sponsor TECHdotMN?

We have been busy revolutionizing tech at Target. Just over a year ago, about 70% of our engineering staff was third-party contractors vs. 30% Target team members. In just a year’s time, we’ve completely flipped that ratio—so that now about 70% of our engineering staff is team members while 30% are contractors. Going forward we’d like to see that ratio get up to 80:20. We believe that to win in retail today and into the future you’ve got to own and build your own technology, and that is what prompted the move to a service-based architecture that we have built in-house.

TECHdotMN has many reaches into our local Twin Cities tech community. We are looking to team up with technology experts who can connect the in-store and digital environment, and make on-demand-shopping at Target simple, secure and enjoyable. Engineers will help develop strategies that drive innovation and sales, while creating a fast and frictionless experience for millions of guests and team members. Our team is given opportunities to solve challenging problems and master new skills, all while leveraging leading-edge technology.
