Beta Byte: Pi-Hole

screen-shot-2016-11-02-at-1-06-38-pmBeta Byte is a series underwritten by Bust Out Solutions for that early stage tech found somewhere between idea and traction.

What is the name of the company and/or product?

What distinct problem does this solve for who and how does this create value for them?

Pi-hole prevents ads from being downloaded for every device on your network without the need to install software. This helps save bandwidth because the ads are never downloaded. In addition, it helps protects users from malvertising.

How did you come up with the idea / what was your motivation for starting?

I liked the AdTrap, but it was too slow and and poorly-designed. I had a Raspberry Pi in my closet and I knew I could come up with something better based on my networking background.

What is the full launch/release date planned?

I released Pi-hole on June 8, 2014 and am seeking to commercialize the product.

For the home users, we will be offering a subscription to use Pi-hole from the cloud.

Who is the customer and what is your revenue model?

We currently operate on a donation model, but are looking to generate revenue with the Pi-hole as a Service for home users.

What is your greatest strength?

Our team. We work well together and each bring some unique skills to the table.

What is your biggest weakness?

Time. Everyone has full time jobs and keeping up with the growing project is challenging.

What is one resource you could use that would take this to the next level?

The ability for one or two of us to work on the project full-time.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

No thank you.
