The TECHdotMN team would like to introduce you to each of the startups featured in the upcoming BETA showcase. Over the next couple of weeks, we will highlight each company, so you can get a better idea of the talent, hardwork, and dedication held within each of these startups.
The next startup to be highlighted in this series is: NovoClade
NovoClade is developing state of the art pest control solutions that is incredibly effective without unnecessary harm to the environment.
Tell us the story of how and why you started your company.
We are passionate about reducing chemical footprint in the environment. Pesticide use for insect control is the major driver of chemical effect in the environment that threatens the pollinators and other beneficial insects. At the same time, mosquitoes are single most driver of human death worldwide, estimated to be responsible for the death of more than 700,000 people every year. While working at the UMN Biotechnology Institute, we came up with the idea to control insects without harming the environment. Now we want to bring the technology to market so everyone can get the benefit of the technology.
What’s your most recent success or milestone hit?
Earlier this year, we obtained funding from the National Science Foundation. We were also successful at creating a prototype insect in model fruit fly, which will be directly translated to spotted wing drosophila, a fruit fly devastating the berry industry.
Where do you see your startup in 1 year?
In the next year we hope to have the minimum viable product made and submitted application for field trial to USDA.
