BETA Startup Showcase: Plyo

BETA Startup: Plyo LogoThe TECHdotMN team would like to introduce you to each of the startups featured in the upcoming BETA showcase. Over the next couple of weeks, we will highlight each company, so you can get a better idea of the talent, hardwork, and dedication held within each of these startups.

The next company in our BETA Startup Showcase series is: Plyo

Plyo is a technology platform that rewards college students for exercising on campus with virtual points that can be redeemed for exclusive offers at popular restaurants, retailers, and brands.

Tell us the story of how and why you started your company.
During college, we saw a serious problem in the lifestyle habits our friends were forming, especially at such an important part of their lives. We started Plyo in a dorm room at the University of Minnesota in 2017 with the goal of encouraging students to prioritize their health and fitness. Being physically active is fundamental to living a happy and wholesome life, and the key to building an active lifestyle is making fitness fun and sustainable. We created Plyo so that anyone can jump in and start seeing the rewards of being active. Whether it’s running, weightlifting, yoga, or their favorite sports, it’s our goal to inspire students during their college years to form healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

What’s your most recent success or milestone hit?
After launching Plyo last September at the University of Minnesota, we quickly grew to 10,000 users in the Twin Cities area. With promising early traction, we recently closed on a round of early stage capital to fund our expansion into the Big 10 university conference, starting with The Ohio State University and the University of Iowa where we’ve nearly doubled our user base in the past few weeks!

Where do you see your startup in 1 year?
A year from now we hope to break 100,000 users in the Big 10 conference, reach profitability, grow our team, and begin national expansion.
