MobDemoThe fourth annual MobDemo competition returned last week during the two day MobCon technology conference in downtown Minneapolis.

Five local mobile startups took the stage to give their best product pitch to a live audience, and in the end, myBivy emerged victorious per collective audience judgement.

Macalester senior Tyler Skluzacek won the grand prize of $5,000 along with $20,000 in free mobile development from MentorMate and $3,000 in free legal services from Gray Plant Mooty. Second place went to Aneela Kumar, Kid Around Town. Below are pitches captured from all the contenders:

48 Minnesota tech ventures raised over $44m in Q2 2014

5693558-green-tree-growing-currency-with-dollar-sign-on-white-backgroundAt least 48 different Minnesota tech ventures raised $44m investment capital during the second quarter of 2014, according to information collected and analyzed from April 1 through June 30, 2014.

The data includes on the record activity compiled from multiple sources; this proxy of current local funding activity and trends is a worse case scenario as there are always undisclosed transactions not factored.

Compared to the same period last year, a record high 62 different companies raised $65m (-20%/-32%). Versus the first quarter of 2014, there’s consistency with 40 companies raising $50m.  Overall this year, our records show Minnesota’s tech ventures have raised approximately $95m.

Minneapolis startup Perk Health raises $400k

PerkHealthMinneapolis health IT startup Perk Health has closed on $404k of a $600k equity round according to recent SEC disclosure filings.

Perk was launched in the summer of 2012 by co founders Zach McGill and Doug DeBold as a mobile virtual personal training app that adapts to each individual via custom coaching.   In the fall, they landed their first big customer, health insurer UCare, who rolled it out to some 800+ employees.

Perk HealthMinneapolis health tech startup Perk Health has converted its first paying customer — a big deal for any startup, especially business-to-business where the sales cycle is longer and harder.

Perk Health is the creator of a web and mobile application that systematically designed to get more employees physically active through an unprecedented level of personalization.

After a four month pilot, Perk’s tool has been fully adopted by health insurer Ucare for internal usage and will be rolling out to all 800+ employees by Jan 1.
