What to know about the Dreamland on 38th project:
- The 7,500-square-foot building at E. 38th and 4th Ave. S (donated by KingField Family Dental CEO Freeman Waynewood) aims to be an anchor for the long-time home to Black-owned businesses
- When finished, the building will serve as a workspace for Black food entrepreneurs and a community event space
- A $250,000 state grant given to the Cultural Wellness Center (a non-profit that owns the Midtown Global Market)
- sparked the project to re-envision the now-vacant spot and will launch a $5 million private fundraising campaign
- 4RM+ULA, an architectural firm, is a partner for the project
- The name “Dreamland on 38th” harkens back to the Dreamland Café, a restaurant that once served as a hub for the south Minneapolis Black community in the space
