BETA is Seeking a New Executive Director

Position Title: ​Executive Director

Reports To: BETA Board of Directors

Salary: $100-120K base + variable compensation 

Overview:

The Executive Director of BETA is the face of the Minnesota startup community. Filling an exciting role at the intersection of three powerful brands — BETA, Twin Cities Startup Week, and tech.mn — we are looking for the next fearless leader to fulfill the organization’s mission by working in partnership with BETA’s governing Board of Directors to define and deliver the organization’s overall vision, operational, and talent plans. The Executive Director is responsible for the successful delivery, growth, and impact of all BETA planning, programming, personnel, and day-to-day operations.

BETA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to accelerate the success of Minnesota tech founders. To fulfill this mission, BETA runs a series of founder-first programs, provides media coverage and startup news through tech.mn, and operates Twin Cities Startup Week, the second-largest of its kind in the nation. The next leader of BETA has the opportunity to accelerate the growth and impact of the organization and drive a strategy to fully leverage all three of these assets under one organizational umbrella.   

Primary Responsibilities

  • Execute all job duties in alignment with BETA’s core mission, vision, and values.
  • In collaboration with BETA Board of Directors, lead the development and execution of a strategic plan identifying programmatic and operational priorities to integrate the three program areas and drive BETA’s impact over the next 3 years.  
  • Develop and execute a plan to increase revenue to fund strategic priorities and operations of BETA through a combination of earned revenue, sponsorships, institutional grants and donations.
  • Provide the operational leadership to run BETA’s core programming, including:
    • Continue to grow Twin Cities Startup Week; create a vision and plan to make it a global destination for innovation and entrepreneurship. 
    • Innovate and improve BETA’s founder programming, including BETA Cohort, BETA Showcase, BETA Backers and BETA Bridge.  
    • Integrate and maximize the potential of newly acquired publication tech.mn.
  • Select, on-board, manage, and sufficiently grow the BETA staff to deliver on defined goals, expand organizational capabilities, and create a highly engaged and retained workforce.
  • Represent BETA at meetings and community events as an ambassador of the brand, including public speaking and solicitations to ensure BETA is known as the go-to resource for startups in Minnesota.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Produce quarterly and annual reporting to BETA Board of Directors on the financial position, results of operations, founder traction, and impact.  
  • Drive and manage efforts to stay within annual Board of Directors’ approved program budgets while making financing operating decisions throughout the year.
  • Provide a 50+ NPS score user experience to BETA’s key program participants – founders, funders, and attendees.
  • Collaborate and participate in writing grants to secure funding.
  • Work with an accounting resource to ensure that all financial reporting meets
    acceptable financial practices and standards for a non-profit.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed, which may include occasional
    weekends and evenings.

Experience (Required)

  • 5+ years of experience in fast-paced environments within technology, startups, entrepreneurship, or non-profits.
  • Proven experience as a team leader.
  • Familiarity with the early-stage, tech companies.
  • Experience generating revenue and fundraising.  
  • Experience leading strategy and execution of large scale events.  
  • Experience going through an annual budgeting process with regular reporting.

Experience (Nice to Have)

  • Reporting to a board and preparing for board meetings.
  • Previous experience working with/in a non-profit.
  • Knowledge and understanding of media companies.
